The Reel Earth Awards recognise excellence and relevance in environmental documentary film making. The awards are the pinnacle of recognition and winning entries have surmounted the hurdles of the selection, nomination and awards jury.

At Reel Earth, we work to ensure our juried competitions confer, without bias, the critical recognition of excellence in film craft and storytelling with a focus on the environment.  Our juries are comprised of recognised experts in three fields:  environment, film, and that most vital of audiences – the discerning cinema patron.

Award winners will be announced live at the Gala Awards evening in Palmerston North New Zealand on the evening of Saturday 19 May 2012.

The suite of awards are made possible by a generous team of sponsoring organisations.

In 2012 our Jury Panels are once again charged with conferring the honour and laurels to the best film among hundreds of films entered from nearly forty countries on six continents. Our selectors know each film is crafted to variously inform, stimulate thought, provoke debate, uplift, encourage and inspire; and it is with the utmost care that the nominations are placed before the Jury Panels to deliberate and confer our awards and associated prize monies.

The judging criteria focus on excellence in film craft and environmental relevance of the work.  As is the case with the judging of any complex human performance, the panelists often find that in addition to excellence and relevance, the winning film conveys the ‘wow’ factor that transcends the singularity of any criterion and points to an exceptional production that touches the heart and lingers in the mind.

To the exceptional cohort of filmmakers behind our 2012 Official Selections we offer our best wishes; and to the Festival goers we can only say, the treat is yours to enjoy this May!
