Provocative and thought provoking.  Challenging, beautiful, entertaining and diverse. Film from twenty one countries made the cut in Reel Earth’s 2010 program.  In short – this is the best single collection of nature and environmental film to ever grace the big screen in Australasia.

Reel Earth is proud to list twenty six feature length films as Official Selections for the 2010 Festival Season.  The list includes stimulating documentary works, two compelling European dramas, and a creatively rendered, hard hitting docu-drama featuring Oscar nominee Pete Postlethwaite and co-produced in the United Kingdom by New Zealander Lizzie Gillette. The strong field of features is supported by twenty short films and a collection of thirty ultra short films, including several superbly animated works.

The New Zealand audience will enjoy the diversity of film craft, experience the creative evolution of documentary film, see international examples of local challenges and solutions, and be inspired by the power of one to make a remarkable and positive transformative change toward environmental sustainability.

Controversy and success in wildlife conservation, the politics and beauty of oceans and water, and the challenge of a changing climate amidst shifting resources are emergent themes in this year’s selected film.

In the list New Zealand is well represented with two feature films, five shorts and three ultra-shorts.  Canada is the best represented in the ultra short category with nine films.  Both the features and the shorts categories are led by USA-based filmmakers, with seventeen titles.  But despite the common geographic origin, they present a global focus including works created in Africa, South America and the Arctic and Antarctic regions.

Over forty hours of film will be screened in Reel Earth’s fortnight Festival Season of 23 May to 5 June.  The outstanding global pool of entries and collective effort of eight selectors working through each film has led to this remarkable new program.
