19th May 2010       Regent Theatre, Palmerston North

Teachers and Students –

On Wednesday 19th May 2010 you are invited to attend the School Sessions of Reel Earth, the Southern Hemisphere’s leading Environmental Film Festival, at the Regent on Broadway in Palmerston North.

REEL EARTH 4 SCHOOLS 2010 is an engaging 90 min programme of short movies and animations; bringing current, curriculum related environmental topics to year 6 to year 13 students.

For a low cost, $2 per student with supervising adults free, teachers are able to arrange for their class to attend the schools screenings at either 10:45 am or 12:45 pm. Invoices will be sent to your school.

For further information email  4schools@reelearth.org.nz

After attending the 2010 Festival School Sessions we hope students and teachers will be inspired to make their own short film to enter in the 2011 Festival.  It is a chance to win an award and prizes, and to have your work recognized on the big screen.

About Reel Earth for Schools

Each year Reel Earth's Schools Team chooses a selection of short films to create a 90 minute hosted programme to engage students years 6 to 13.

Films are carefully selected on the basis of their relevance to a range of curriculum areas and contemporary environmental issues.

Teachers have brought classes from business studies, commerce, english departments, environmental education, general classes, geography, media studies, science, and social studies.  The feedback has been that the teachers were able to make clear connections with the New Zealand Curriculum in a variety of strands. The teachers felt students gained valuable insights, became enthusiastic and motivated from viewing Reel Earth’s Schools Programmes.

Your class will almost certainly do so too!

TESTIMONIAL

Reel Earth Environmental Film festival 2009.

As teacher in charge of senior social studies at Palmerston North Girls High School I have organised all our senior social studies students to attend this event for the last three years.

We attend because the films in the festival are such powerful examples of social action.  Watching the many examples in the schools’ programme helps the students to understand the process of social action.  They need to do this because one social studies NCEA achievement standard is based around how the students are able to describe social action and its consequences.  I think the students are most fortunate to have the opportunity to see world class examples here in Palmerston North.

I surveyed the classes afterwards, around 90 students, and all were positive that they had learned worthwhile information by attending.  The year 12 and 13 students, some of whom were attending for the third year running, commented on how the standard continues to rise each year.
