Reel Earth: Past, Present, and Future

Kia ora, welcome to Reel Earth, the leading film festival in the Southern Hemisphere with a focus on nature and the environment.  Hosted in New Zealand’s magnificent Manawatu region: a thriving riverside community with a rich culture of heartland values, commitment to sustainability, and vibrant science and education realm.

New Zealand is globally renowned for the creative expression in film and for its unrivalled and superb natural environment, making it the perfect place to host an international film festival focused on nature and the environment.

Reel Earth sprang from humble origins in 2004, thanks to a small band of friends with a shared passion for film and a sustainable future. Their vision, to encourage environmental awareness, sustainability and changing attitudes through film, continues to underpin the festival. Today Reel Earth has flourished to become recognised by audiences as a festival that seeks, selects, and presents the best new films from New Zealand and around the world.

In recognition of the Festival’s impact and excellence, Reel Earth achieved Finalist status in New Zealand’s annual Ministry for the Environment Green Ribbon Awards in 2011.

In 2016 The Reel Earth Film Festival was adopted by the Palmerston North City Environmental Trust, which now continues to run it on an annual basis.

Palmerston North City Council is the primary funder Reel Earth Environmental Film Festival.
